LEWISTON — As the greater Lewiston-Auburn community finds itself a year on from the Oct. 25, 2023, mass shooting, several events are planned in commemoration and remembrance of the 18 victims.
The Lewiston-Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, cities of Lewiston and Auburn and the Maine Resiliency Center will be hosting the OneLewiston Commemoration on Friday at The Colisée, 190 Birch St.
The doors to The Colisée will open at 4:30 p.m. and the program will run 6-7:30 p.m. A shuttle service will be provided at 4 p.m. from the Oak Street and Southern Gateway garages at 1 Oak St. and 425 Lisbon St., respectively. The shuttle will return to the garages at 8 p.m.
Donations toward a permanent memorial can be made at onelewiston.org/donation-form/
Tree Street Youth will hold Love Lewiston Week from Oct. 28 to Nov. 1. The week is geared toward inspiring community members to treat one another with kindness and support.
“We take action to honor the victims and their families and show the many ways we care for the community we all love,” Tree Street Youth said on their website.
Some of the actions the organization hopes to inspire is by spreading hand drawn and handmade blue hearts across the city in places important to community members.
“Post a blue heart in your windows at home, your business or your car,” the organization shared on their website. “You can make your own blue hearts or you can pick some up at Tree Street Youth.”
Tree Street Youth also wants community members to plan service projects and to, generally, spread kindness throughout the community. Of the several ideas the organization has collected from its youth members, people can buy coffee for their neighbor, collect supplies for or donate to a local organization, plant a tree or exchange an uplifting smile.
“Take time to spread love … After all of the pain that was generated from this event, we can all take part in spreading love and kindness in our community.”
Trinity COMMONS at the 247 Bates St. Trinity Church will hold Time of Remembrance, Lament, Hope and Re-Dedication at 11 a.m. Friday. The COMMONS program is a project expanding the use of the church as a center for the arts and other neighborhood events and programs, according to OneLewiston programming.
The space has a labyrinth, typically open to the public for quiet walking meditation, which will be open at the same time as the remembrance.
The Gomes Chapel at Bates College will hold a Remembrance Service for students and staff at noon Friday. Speakers will include Bates College President Garry W. Jenkins, Mayor Carl Sheline, and college multifaith chaplain Dr. Rev. Brittany Longsdorff. Several students will speak before associate multifaith chaplain Rev. Raymond Cloutier reads the names of the 18 victims.
“The bell in Hathorn will toll for each of them,” said Mary Pols, Bates College director of media relations.
The service will also be live streamed at bates.edu/multifaith/vigil-of-remembrance-on-october-25th-at-12-noon-in-gomes-chapel/.
Prince of Peace Holy Family Church will keep its doors open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday for prayer and silent reflection.
“There will be a Holy Hour during the time of the shooting,” according to OneLewiston programming. “A Holy Hour is a time of silence and prayer before Jesus in the Most Blessed Sacrament. All are welcome to just stop by and pray.”
St. Philip Church at 2365 Turner Road will hold a nondenominational service at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The service is for hospice patients, their family and friends, staff and anyone in the community who may have lost a loved one.
The Maine Nordiques will take on the Northeast Generals out of Canton, Massachusetts in a two-game faceoff Saturday and Sunday. The games are being held in honor of the mass shooting victims. For tickets, go to showpass.com/2024-single-game-tickets-2/.
