PARIS — Join Oxford County Soil & Water Conservation District on Wednesday, November 6 from 3-5 p.m. in Paris for a workshop about starting trees from seeds. There are many nut trees that are hardy in the northeast and can be easily grown in Maine. Nuts can provide a nutritious food source for people and a valuable source of food for wildlife. Chestnuts, filberts, hazelnuts, hickory, butternuts, black walnuts, and many oaks, can be grown from nuts they produce and become nut-bearing trees in as little as 8-10 years, providing a source of alternative income at farmer’s markets.
Join Michele Windsor, Project Manager of our Food Forest Project, to learn how to prepare nuts for germination and start your own nut tree orchard. Participants will be given Black walnuts and European chestnuts that they can use to start their own trees.
This event is free, but participants are asked to please register by visiting our website at oxfordcountyswcd.org/workshops. The registration deadline is Monday, November 4. For more information, contact Chantelle Hay, Education and Outreach Coordinator, Oxford County Soil and Water Conservation District at OxfordCountySWCD@gmail.com or 207-744-3111.
