Concrete is poured Tuesday for the historic 1799 Herb House at Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village on Route 26 in New Gloucester in a restoration project that’s been planned for over 50 years. Coinciding with the Shakers’ 250 years in America, the project celebrates the village’s legacy in medicinal herbs. According to Director Michael Graham, U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree recently selected the project for federal support and successfully moved it through a House subcommittee, securing $1.2 million, pending broader congressional approval. If granted, the money will be essential for keeping the project on track for completion in 2026. Once finished, the building will house a culinary kitchen, art classroom and community incubator, all vital to the village’s educational and community mission. After a few weeks of curing, the foundation will be ready to support the Herb House, with large foundation stones, shown on the left, added for structural support and historical appeal.
