WINTHROP — They’ve owned Class C field hockey for three years now and their region for the past seven — and as another season nears its end, the Winthrop juggernaut just keeps on chugging.
Winthrop advanced to its seventh consecutive regional title game with a 7-1 victory over Spruce Mountain in Friday’s semifinal showdown at Charlie’s Field. The win sent the Ramblers to Wednesday’s C South title game against either Hall-Dale or St. Dominic Academy at Falmouth High School.
The Ramblers got four goals and two assists from senior Madeline Wagner and one goal each from Evelyn Mortimer, Sophie Shuman and Kylee Mansir to claim their 20th consecutive victory dating back to Oct. 24 of last year. Ava Davis scored the lone goal for Spruce Mountain.
“We definitely settled in nicely, and that’s what I was asking for from my girls,” said Winthrop head coach Melissa Perkins. “We really wanted to play our game, not be nervous, play our way and not get pulled into playing somebody else’s style of play. We did a great job of that.”
Top-seeded Winthrop (16-0) put No. 4 Spruce Mountain on notice early as the Phoenix were forced to scramble to deny two solid scoring chances for the Ramblers. The hot start would yield a goal for the home team as Mortimer scored with 8:13 left in the opening period to give Winthrop the lead.
Spruce Mountain (9-7) improved after going down a goal and forced Winthrop’s Cyara Harriman to make a clutch save with three minutes left in the first quarter. With 1:29 left in the second, though, the Ramblers doubled the lead as Shuman pounded from close range to make it 2-0.
In the second half, Winthrop took it up a notch further. First, Wagner scored her first of the game with 9:47 left in the third quarter. Mansir made it 4-0 Ramblers with 8:10 left in the period, and just 27 seconds later, Wagner scored again and forced Spruce Mountain into a timeout.
“We wanted to change the game and shift the momentum, and we did; that turned it completely in our favor,” Wagner said. “I’m really proud of everyone for coming out in the second half, not slowing down and knowing that we had to put in a few more goals to really put this away.”
Spruce Mountain found its footing and went on the offensive out of the timeout and found the scoreboard with 11:23 left in the fourth quarter through Davis. Yet that would be all for the Phoenix as Wagner made it a hat trick for Winthrop with 4:04 remaining before scoring her fourth with 47 seconds to play.
The game saw major contributions from Winthrop’s three freshman starters with Mortimer and Shuman scoring and Grace Folsom assisting on Mansir’s goal in the third quarter. It’s a group that Winthrop’s veterans have been waiting to reach varsity play for a while — and are certainly appreciating.
“Any time you can have the younger players on the team play a significant role for you, it’s really something you look forward to,” Wagner said. “I’ve been looking forward to them coming up and being able to play with them for years, and they’ve really played well. It’s been amazing.”
