AUBURN — A Lewiston man who police said had been forcing a woman to perform sex acts for paying street customers was charged Tuesday with a felony.
An Androscoggin County grand jury handed up an indictment against Frederick Jackson, 57, on a charge of aggravated sex trafficking. If convicted, he could be sentenced up to 10 years in prison.
He is being held at the Androscoggin County Jail in lieu of $7,500 cash bail.
Jackson was indicted last month on a charge of domestic violence aggravated assault, a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison. That charge stems from an incident at his Lafayette Street home in August.
Investigators said Jackson placed the woman in dangerous situations, including one instance where she was jumped by a man on Pierce Street while the woman was two months pregnant, according to a police affidavit. The assault caused the woman to lose the baby, police said.
Jackson had forced the woman to perform sex acts on three customers a night at a rate of $100 apiece, police said.
He is a known member of the Bloods street gang and that, in addition to taking all the woman’s money obtained through prostitution, he regularly assaulted and strangled her, police said.
The woman told a Lewiston police officer that Jackson had been forcing her into prostitution for the past six months, typically in the area of Ash and Pine streets in Lewiston, according to court papers.
While she was on the streets, police said, Jackson would contact her through the “Text Now” app, monitoring her behavior and frequently complaining that she was taking too long with customers.
When the woman was jumped on Pierce Street by a 26-year-old local man and others, the attack was meant as retribution for one of Jackson’s earlier disputes with the man over the sale of crack cocaine, the woman told police.
The alleged assailant was ultimately charged with assault for the attack.
Court papers cite two other incidents during which the woman was assaulted, once in June and again in August.
The woman told police that Jackson had also forced her to commit a robbery against a man who had failed to pay for sex acts performed by her, according to court papers.
