TURNER — Leavitt coach Mike Hathaway knew the Hornets had scoring depth on the roster coming into the season.

They showed a heavy dose of that in Friday’s 60-41 boys basketball win over Oak Hill on Friday, when 11 of their 12 players scored.

“We were pretty good up and down the scorebook,” Hathaway said. “(Dane) Cabral and (Riley) Meisner, I think, had 15 points in 3s (combined). I think they were 5-for-5 on 3s off the bench. To get that kind of contribution from those guys, a couple of seniors who are good role guys for us, they knocked down some perimeter shots.”

Cabral and Meisner are two of only four seniors on the Leavitt roster.

Sophomore Colin Schlobohm, who led the Hornets (1-1) with 12 points, said getting contributions from those veteran seniors, especially from beyond the arc, is big for Leavitt.

“They’re huge. I mean, those guys stepped in and hit them know they haven’t been falling for them, but they weren’t scared of the moment,” Schlobohm said of Cabral and Meisner.” “They knocked they knocked them down.”

Brody Poland, who finished with 10 points said getting contributions from others will free up Schlobohm. Schlobohm was the Hornets’ leading scorer last season when he averaged 11.1 points per game.

Brody Poland, who finished with 10 points said getting contributions from others will free up Schlobohm, who was Leavitt’s top scorer last season with 11.1 points per game. Schlobohm said multiple scoring options relieves the pressure on everyone.

Hathaway said extending the bench will only create competition within the group for playing time.

“I told those guys, ‘Like, if you get in and you don’t contribute, there’s a lot of guys to play,'” Hathaway said. “So you better get in and do something with your opportunities. So I think we’ll just keep, you know, trying to use our depth to our advantage that way.”

The players said practices have been competitive since the start of preseason.

“We can all work together and we all work hard,” Schlobohm stated. “I love all these guys and work hard to get them to practice so we can all share on game day.”

RAIDERS’ SHOT SELECTION

Oak Hill head coach Ben Redstone said the Raiders need to work for higher-quality shots.

“Tonight was definitely a hard night putting the ball in the basket for us,” Redstone said. “That’s something we have to work on: Better shot selection, more movement, more screens. But, yeah, we’re not going to win many basketball games scoring 41 points.”

The Raiders couldn’t get all of their top players going at once in Friday’s setback. Braden New scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half, while PJ Smith scored all of his 10 points in the second half.

“Braden’s a great basketball player, plays with a lot of heart, a lot of effort,” Redstone said. “We rely on him for a lot, and I thought he played a great first half tonight.”

Redstone said PJ Smith played well in the second half and missed shots that normally go down.

Oak Hill’s focus for the next few games will be working hard and enjoying the process of improvement.

“It’s all about effort, it’s all about intensity, it’s all about being up to play, matching the physicality of the opposing team, and having some fun out there,” Redstone said. “We’ve got to enjoy basketball. It shouldn’t be a mope around and be mad. It needs to be, let’s get out, let’s compete, and let’s enjoy what we’re doing.”
