The Grinch comes bearing gifts this Christmas season. Submitted

GREENWOOD — At the fire department annual Christmas party, they were surprised with a visit from the Grinch himself. Except this year, rather than a sleigh full of presents, he brought them a new all terrain vehicle, donated for the fire department to use.

While the donor wished to remain anonymous, the green fur gave him away as the Grinch, whose heart had grown three sizes in anticipation of Christmas. Alongside this generous donation, Woodstock Fire Chief Kyle Hopps was also in the giving spirit, donating a rescue toboggan for the Greenwood Fire Department to use.

The vehicle is a John Deere Gator UTV4x4, which can be equipped with both wheels and tracks to be used in different seasons. Fire Chief Ken Cole said the intent is to use the vehicle for rescues in the backcountry, taking advantage of the vehicle’s all terrain and all season capabilities. “The ability to shuttle people and equipment to and from remote locations quickly is very important,” said Cole.

While the combined donation is valued at over $25,000, no taxpayer dollars are being spent on these new vehicles, as they are donations in the giving spirit. The all terrain vehicle is very adaptable. Cole expressed enthusiasm for its multiple uses. “We can use it on the snowmobile trails, and in the fall we can pop tires on it and use it as an ATV,” he said.

The Greenwood Fire Department thanks both donors for their contributions to the fire department.  Cole says, “The Greenwood Fire and Rescue department and the Grinch, would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe, healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.” And an added wish for those looking to take advantage of the snowy weather: “Let’s not meet by accident.”
