William “Bill” Allen York

TURNER – William “Bill” Allen York, 87, of Turner, went to be with the Lord, peacefully on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, surrounded by his family. Bill was born in Cawker City, Kan., on Nov. 27, 1937, the son of Alvin York and Audrey (Garringer) York. He was a graduate of Lewiston High School. On Jan. 18, 1967, in Bangor, he married Nancy Marie Gates of Boston, Mass. Together, they made their home in Turner.

Bill served in the United States Air Force as a jet engine mechanic. For most of his life, Bill’s profession was as a mechanic. He took time away from being a mechanic to be a long-distance truck driver, and a teacher of shop, welding, and small engine repair for Adult Ed at Leavitt Area High School. He was also a certified auctioneer for Bill’s Bargain Barn in Turner.

Bill was proud of his involvement in automobile racing. His favorite hobby when he moved to Maine was racing. He was on the pit crew for Mike Rowe’s 5-car (Rebel) and David Coutermarsh’s # 61. He was also the mechanic on his and his son’s mini-cup cars at Oxford Plains Speedway.

Bill was a very talented woodworker. Many of his friends and family cherish beautiful items that he crafted in his shop.

He was a devout Christian who spent many hours sharing the word of God with anyone who would listen.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Nancy York; his children, Chris (Tracy), Darlene (Mitch), Dorothy, and Timothy; his grandchildren, Samantha, Billy, Jake, Jillian, Julia, Crystal, Jeremy, Nicole and Jacob; and a great-granddaughter, Mei; his brother, Wes and his wife Rae, sister, Sandra and her husband Mel, brother Kenny, sister Carol, brother Rodney; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; his children, Glenn, Michael, William, and Theresa; siblings Juanita, Rosalee, Charlie and his brother Ed who passed 12 hours after he did.

A Celebration of Life will be announced for friends and family at a later date. Interment Maple Grove Cemetery, North Parish Road, Turner. Arrangements by Finley Funeral Home, 15 Church St., Livermore Falls.
