
AUBURN – Another of the greatest generation has passed.
Joseph Prescott Maloney, of Auburn, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He loved his wife, his family, his country and his home.
Joe was born on July 19, 1926, in Lewiston. He was the son of Cornelius Thomas (Jack) Maloney and Margaret Prescott Fogg Maloney, and he was a descendant of Mayflower passengers John Howland and Elizabeth Tilley Howland.
He grew up on the Fogg family farm in Readfield, moving to Auburn in 1936. He attended schools in Readfield and Auburn, graduating from Edward Little High School in 1944. While at Edward Little Joe received varsity letters in basketball and baseball. Joe was a Veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946 aboard the USS Governor AMc-82 as a Master Machinist Mate.
Joe married his soulmate Carlene Mower of Lewiston on Feb 3, 1961. He had five children, Bonnie Lynn Maloney Lash (Neil Lash) of Waldoboro, John Alan Maloney (Connie Pontbriand) of Turner, Joseph Prescott Maloney Jr. (Valerie Morris) of Auburn, Daniel Charles Maloney (Lisa Knowles) and James David Maloney (Philip Judson) of New York and Palm Beach.
After his service Joe was employed at his father’s business Bert Signs Co. of Lewiston becoming a partner, then owner, retiring in 1985. After selling his business he worked for Fleet/Norstar Bank for five years, retiring in 1990. He was also employed by Knowles Industrial Services Corp. in Gorham as a truck driver delivering construction equipment and material throughout New England for 21 years, retiring in 2011.
Joe was a parishioner at St. Phillip Catholic Church and a member of the Auburn Grandstand Club (past President), Alden M. Gayton Post #31 American Legion, and East Auburn Community Unit. He was also a Freemason and a member of Lafayette Lodge #48 (A.F. & A.M.), Bradford Royal Arch Chapter #9 (past High Priest), Royal & Select Masters Dunlap Council #8, Lewiston Commandery #6 Knights Templar (past Commander), Eusebius Conclave #3 (K.R.C.C.) and Kora Temple (Demitted).
In addition to his wife, children and their spouses, Joe leaves behind nine grandchildren, Scott Lash, Cheryl Lash, Matthew Lash, William Redmun III, Heather Maloney, Robert Lash, Matthew Maloney, Ellen Maloney, and Mary Maloney; and 10 great grandchildren.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the team at Schooner Estates for their loving care and support during his years there. They also wish to thank Donna Wheeler at the Department of Veterans Affairs for her dedicated care and support to Joe and his family.
Honoring Joe’s wishes, the family will hold a private graveside service at Mount Auburn Cemetery.
