Madeleine G. Girardin

LEWISTON – Madeleine G. Girardin, 83, of Lewiston died peacefully on Dec. 4, 2021 surrounded by her children. Her final hours were passed in prayer and song, as the children held her hands until she met her Lord. She smiled as the Rosary was prayed and added her voice when she could.

Madeleine was born in Lewiston, Sept 12, 1938, and was the daughter of Thomas Pierre and Bernadette Goulet Grenier. She attended Holy Family School and Lewiston High School, with her secondary education at the St. Mary’s School of Nursing where she graduated in 1959. She worked at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center from her graduation until her retirement, 45 years later. Her first 30 years of nursing were on the maternity ward, where she assisted in the delivery of thousands of children in the area and actually remembered most of the families throughout her life.

Throughout her life, Madeleine was very involved in her faith, not only helping the Church at Holy Cross but also actively living by the Beatitudes of the Catholic faith, helping endless charities with financial support and volunteering her time and skill. She was firm, but also lived a life of grace and kindness. To meet Madeleine was to love her, she was the one all went to when life threw a curve ball. Her love and counsel reached far beyond her children; to cousins, siblings, and friends, who constantly sought her help, prayers and encouragement. She loved her time with her grandchildren and had a unique relationship with each and every one. She was their biggest fan, attending sporting events, plays, and providing rides to endless events.

In her childhood, Madeleine grew up on North Temple Street in a family of 18 children and for many of those years four sisters, Madeleine, Georgette, Ginette and Marthe shared a bed and clothing. Although they had little in way of possessions, they had a wonderful youth, with love and support from their parents and each other.

In 1960, Madeleine and Robert Girardin were married in a double wedding with her sister, Georgette and Emile Clavet. Madeleine and her siblings spent much time together raising their families. Nieces and nephews are an invaluable part of her extended family.

Madeleine was predeceased by her husband Robert and her son Andrew. She is survived by her five children, LuAnn Labbe and husband Anthony and their children Deneiges, Robert (Bobby) and Maria; Michael Girardin and his children Hailey, Thomas and Leighton; Joni Girardin (wife of Andrew) and their children Shayla and Tirzah; Jennifer Perry and her husband Dan and their children Grace, Marinn and Sawyer; Valerie Racine and her fiancée, Thomas Dupont, and her children Sydnie, Bernadette, Patric and Cecelia; and Gregory Girardin. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Adeline, James, Stella and Madeleine.

A heartfelt thanks goes to the staff on T3 and ICU at CMMC who provided outstanding care to Mom throughout her hospital stay.
