CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — University of Maine held the lead after one quarter, but Boston College took it away and ran away with a 69-44 victory in the first round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament on Thursday at Conte Forum.

The Black Bears led 18-16 before the Eagles outscored them 22-7 in the second quarter.

Maeve Carroll scored her 1,000th point for Maine in the loss, and she finished with eight points. Caroline Bornemann led the Black Bears with 18 points and Anne Simon added 14.

Taylor Soule scored a game-high 21 points for Boston College.

BASEBALL
MCLA 12, UMF 4: A five-run third inning paced the Trailblazers (6-6) to a non-conference victory over the Beavers (0-3) in Davenport, Florida.

Ryan Sargent doubled in Riley Bartell in the bottom of the first to tie the game 1-1 for University of Maine at Farmington, but Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts took the lead back with a run in the top of the second and five more in the third. Traip Academy grad Bobby Lane scored the go-ahead run for the Trailblazers in the second inning.

Lane scored three runs and also doubled for MCLA. Randy Adams led the Trailblazers offense with three hits and two RBIs. Rob Correia earned the win on the mound after scattering one earned run and three hits in five innings.

Sargent collected three hits for the Beavers, and Cal Tibbitts scored two runs while also facing three batters as a relief pitcher. Anthony Boyle took the loss on the mound for UMF, pitching into the third before Tibbitts took over. Oxford Hills grad Troy Johnson pitched two innings of relief and Mt. Blue grad Sam Wrigley pitched a frame.

SALVE REGINA 8, USM 3: Jack Leblond’s standout day at the plate wasn’t enough for the Huskies in a loss to the Seahawks in Auburndale, Florida.

Leblond, a Lewiston native, went 3 for 4 and scored Southern Maine’s first run of the game. He scampered home when Tom Vesosky reached on an error in the top of the third, tying the game 1-1. The Huskies didn’t score again until the eighth, when Arlo Pike’s two-run home run also drove in Zach Mooers.

Joshua Joy took the loss despite pitching into the seventh inning. Oxford Hills grad Wyatt Williamson relieved Joy, and Lisbon grad Lucas Francis finished out the inning on the mound.

Dominic Perachi earned the win for Salve Regina, allowing just one unearned run in six innings. Tyler Petrosino paced the Seahawks bats with four hits and three RBIs, which came on a three-run homer in the six-run seventh inning.

SOFTBALL
BATES DROPS DOUBLEHEADER
GAME 1: EMERSON 11, BATES 4: The Bobcats briefly led in their season-opener, but the Lions responded with 10 runs across two innings in Boston, Massachusetts.

Lindsey Kim singled home Janell Sato and Eliza McNulty walked in Maggie Hillwig to give Bates a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Emerson took the lead back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Bates tied it back up in the fourth on Cassidy Musco’s two-run single, but the Lions scored seven runs in the bottom of the inning.

Danielle Polirer and Hillwig split time in the circle for Bates. Kim led the offense with three hits.

Claire Overton drive in four runs for Emerson, and Calli Pratt pitched a complete game.

GAME 2: EMERSON 6, BATES 3: The Bobcats were held to three hits but made it interesting with two runs in the top of the seventh to draw close.

Hillwig drove in two runs and pitched all six innings in the circle.

Pratt had three hits in the game for the Lions (7-2), and Jessica Gomez struck out 10 in seven innings.

UMF SHUT OUT IN OPENER, THEN WINS IN EXTRAS
BETHEL 7, UMF 0:
The Beavers opened their season with a shutout loss against the Royals (9-2) in Kissimmee, Florida.

Olivia Paradis had two of the four hits for University of Maine at Farmington, and Carleigh Schievink pitched all seven innings, striking out five batters.

Ella Roberts struck out seven and scattered four hits in seven innings for Bethel University (Minnesota), which got home runs from Jamie Axelberg and Jordyn Rudolph.

UMF 11, LASELL 10, 8 INN.: The Beavers jumped out to a 10-4 lead, then finally put away the Lasers (1-6) in the extra eighth inning for their first win of the season in Kissimmee, Florida.

Makayla Wilson and Emma Campbell both drove in two runs, and Leah Stevens was the lone UMF batter with more than one hit, as she collected two to go along with two runs, two RBIs and a walk. Stevens scored the game-winning run on an RBI groundout by Paradis.

Schievink pitched the final 7 1/3 innings after Paradis started the game and got the first two outs of the bottom of the first.

Brianna Gendreau paced the Lasell offense with three hits. The Lasers scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.

USM DROPS PAIR
RUTGERS-CAMDEN 2, SOUTHERN MAINE 1: Rachel White and Zoe Rodrigues hit two-out RBI singles in the top of the sixth to lift the Scarlet-Raptors (3-4) over the Huskies (2-4) at Kissimmee, Florida.

Rona Scott hit an RBI triple for USM in the first inning. Oxford Hills grad Lauren Merrill took the loss despite allowing just five hits over six innings. Buckfield grad Hannah Shields had a pair of hits.

TCNJ 7, SOUTHERN MAINE 6: Kayla Hillenbrand’s RBI single capped a two-run rally in the top of the seventh inning as the Lions (5-2) edged the Huskies (2-5) at Kissimmee, Florida.

Rona Scott hit an RBI double and a two-run single for USM, which erased an early 3-0 deficit. Merrill had two hits and an RBI while playing left field, and Shields added two more hits.

SWIMMING AND DIVING
BATES’ BERRY SETS NEW PROGRAM MARK: Bobcats junior Nathan Berry lowered his own program record in the 50-yard freestyle in the first day of the NCAA Division III championships Wednesday in Indianapolis.

Berry finished his prelim race in 20.02 seconds to break his own program record, then swam the final in 20.07 to place sixth — the best finish by a Bates male at nationals in school history. Berry earned All-American honors with his finish.

Fellow Bobcat men’s swimmer Andrew Hall also received All-American honors after placing 13th in the 200 IM.

On the women’s side, Grace Wenger earned All-American honors individually (12th in 500 free) and as part of the Bobcats’ 200 medley relay. Sophie Cassily, Abigail Gibbons and Marjorie McLeod were also on the team that placed 12th.

The women’s team continued its standout performances Thursday on day two of the competition.

Wenger finished sixth in the 200 free, and earlier in the day she anchored the Bobcats’ 200 free relay. The quartet of Wenger, Gibbons, McLeod and Suzy Ryckman broke its own program record in the prelim race (1:34.01) to become the first Bates women’s team to qualify for the championship final in the event, then finished eighth in the finals race.

Wenger, Gibbons, Ryckman and Cassily teamed up for a 13th place finish in the 400 medley relay to earn All-American honors.

Wenger has amassed five All-American honors alone across the first two days of the competition.

The NCAA championships continue through Saturday.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY
USM’S LAUZIERE NAMED COACH OF THE YEAR FINALIST: University of Southern Maine women’s hockey coach John Lauziere, a 1996 Lewiston High School grad, has been a named a finalist for the CCM/American College Hockey Association Division III Women’s Coach of the Year Award.

Lauziere, who was also named the New England Hockey Conference Coach of the Year, led the Huskies to a 15-9 record, including 12-6 in NEHC conference play.
