SAN DIEGO, Calif. – With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our brother, Mark Earle Smith, on Feb. 27, 2024, at 63 years old.
Born Sept. 21, 1960, to Stanley Earle Smith and Shirley Leimomi Ahuna in Fort Knox, Kentucky, Mark attended Norway and South Paris schools and received his GED from Oxford Hills High School in 1979. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as an Electronics Warfare Technician in San Diego, Calif. Afterwards, Mark’s uncanny ability to diagnose and repair complex machinery led him on a career path that spanned the globe. His work took him to France, Germany and onto an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Between jobs, Mark would always come home to South Paris to pump gas at Market Square station and work alongside his father at their home on Route 26.
Mark specialized in component level troubleshooting, repair and fabrication of electro-mechanical systems, boards, devices and hybrids. For the past five years Mark worked as an Engineering Technician for SmartCover, where he built and tested prototypes and operated environmental chambers to subject products to extreme operating conditions. This job was ideally suited to his skill-set and Mark was admired and respected by his peers. He was a passionate cook, voracious reader and enjoyed spending weekends at the firing range.
Mark was predeceased by his father, Stan; mother, Shirley and grandparents, Ralph and Alice Smith.
He is survived by three siblings: Evon Paula Smith (Clint) Nevada; Lorie Leilani Shelley (Tim) California; Jade Lee Wilkinson (Philip) of Washington state.
