POLAND — First responders reported Sunday that an emergency call reporting a drowning in Range Pond State Park on Saturday ended with a 21-year-old male being transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Poland Fire Rescue Department Capt. Shawn Hazelton said Saturday afternoon that first responders were called out to the Range Pond boat launch just after 2 p.m. for reports of a drowning.

Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy William Gagne said in a Sunday press release that the unnamed 21-year-old victim was swimming with friends when he became fatigued and decided to swim back to shore.

“Along the way he went underwater,” Gagne said. “His friends eventually located the victim and took him to shore, where life saving measures were started.”

Gagne later wrote in an email that the victim was underwater between five and 10 minutes.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he remains in critical condition, Gagne said.
