Rick Clavet grinds a support beam Sept. 16 on playground equipment in preparation for welding a longer section of pipe onto it, which will anchor it into the ground at the former Lake Street School in Auburn. Clavet and other workers are rebuilding the former public school playground, according to Jim Wu, whose family business bought the property last year. In the background: The former elementary school that Wu’s company is set to renovate into 12 apartments. Wu says he had planned to build a day care adjacent to the playground, but the city of Auburn changed its mind and would not allow him to build the day care. Melissa Rivera, 47, received her cancer diagnosis at age 44 and had a bilateral mastectomy. “I didn’t choose cancer.
