WALES — It didn’t take long for the Oak Hill football team to get its offense going on Saturday afternoon.
In fact, the Raiders scored two touchdowns on its first three offensive plays.
Senior running back Kaiden Delano ran for 182 yards on seven carries and scored three touchdowns — all in the first half — to lead Oak Hill to a 43-6 win over Old Town in a Class D game at Stacen Doucette Memorial Field.
“We came out firing and we came out very disciplined,” Delano said. “We had a very focused week of practice. … I’m just very happy and very appreciative of how this game turned out.”
The Raiders (3-3) did most of their damage in the first quarter, scoring on all three of their offensive possessions, as well as a fumble return on a kickoff. The highlight of the period came on Oak Hill’s first drive. On the very first play, Delano took a handoff from quarterback Braden Dubuc and rumbled, nearly untouched, down the sideline for a 63-yard touchdown. P.J. Smith added a 33-yard touchdown run and Dubuc hit tight end Logan Langlois for a 22-yard touchdown pass on his only attempt for the day. By the end of the period, Oak Hill had a 29-0 lead.
“Our (offensive) linemen do a great job,” Delano said. “I got the ball, and I saw an open hole. They kept blocking downfield, and even my (wide receivers), if I had to move, they kept blocking downfield. They’re always making big holes, even if it’s not showing on the scoreboard. They make huge block, and big plays, to get some yards.”
“We talked (at practice) about getting back to executing (on offense) this week, and they did a good job,” Oak Hill head coach Chad Stowell said. “We didn’t expect it to be what it was for a score, but when you execute, those things can happen.”
Delano added a 71-yard touchdown run a 6-yard scoring run in the second quarter to give the Raiders a comfortable 43-0 halftime lead. Delano’s day was done in the backfield, giving way to sophomore Joseph Greenwood, who ran for 55 yards on five carries. Smith added 54 rushing yards on two carries for Oak Hill.
“Our offensive line has been great all year,” Stowell said. “I know Kaiden has a ton of stats, but he really relies on those guys to open up holes. With the five linemen and (Langlois) at tight end, when you start three seniors and three juniors, they’re all big and physical kids. They’ve worked together for a long time and work really well together, they (communicate) really well… We always talk about, if we can let Kaiden get to the line of scrimmage clean, let him make plays, we’re in pretty good shape.”
Old Town (3-3) fought throughout, despite being outmanned. The Coyotes found some success on the ground with their run game, led by sophomore running back Carson Chase, who had 67 yards on 15 carries. Freshman running back Austin King entered the game late in the second half for Old Town, and added 43 yards on seven carries, including the Coyotes’ lone touchdown, a 3-yard run to cut Oak Hill’s lead to 43-6 in the final minute of the game.
Sophomore Brandon Schanz had five receptions for 57 yards for Old Town. Quarterback Ethan Closson was 5 of 13 passing for 47 yards.
Both teams played through strong winds that cut through the field and made passing the ball difficult. Oak Hill kicker Matt Fecteau was perfect on all five of his extra points and provided some booming kickoffs in the first half.
“It’s nice not having to rely on (2-point conversions) when other teams have to,” Stowell said. “Matt gets out here early. He was out here about two hours (before the game), going back and forth (on the field) trying to figure out, ‘What do I have to do when I’ve got the win (at my back)? What do I do when I’m going against the wind?’ He does a really good job. It is nice to have a guy who can get it down there (on kickoffs). He’s good on (point after attempts), we don’t have to worry about that. He’s definitely a weapon.”
The win was a nice bounce-back for Oak Hill, which dropped back-to-back games to Winthrop and Wells. The Warriors (6-0) and Ramblers (6-0) sit at the top of the Class D South standings. With their victory, the Raiders are currently fifth in the standings, tied in record with No. 4 Freeport (3-3).
“It’s definitely a needed win,” Delano said. “To come back and put an excellent score on the board, it gives us sort of a confidence boost. Lets us get ready for the next week of practice.”
