MEXICO — The Board of Selectmen approved Lt. Jamee Theriault as a full-time firefighter Tuesday night.

Theriault was recommended by Chief Gary Wentzell to fill the position held by Marc Mayo who is retiring Nov. 5.

Wentzell said there were two applicants for the position. He selected Theriault, who has volunteered with the department since 2001, in part because of her knowledge of computers. She was also the department’s latest Firefighter of the Year.

He said Theriault will begin training for a month starting the week of Oct. 3, with her first official day in the position the first week in November. Wentzell said she will also be working to get her Class B driver’s license to operate a firetruck.

Wentzell said Mayo has served with the department since 1995. He came here after retiring from the Rumford Fire Department.

In other business:

• Board Chairman Richie Philbrick said the town received 21 applications for the town manager position. From those, selectmen will interview six candidates on Sept. 22 and 27.

Town Manager John Madigan will leave the position Jan. 1.

• The board tabled action on Greater Rumford Area Ministers Pantry Service because of lack of notification. The group, which uses the downstairs of the town hall, was reprimanded July 19 by the board for lack of cleanup. GRAMPS provides a free community lunch every Wednesday. Selectman Reggie Arsenault said problems with the group have continued through the summer. The issue will be discussed at the next selectmen meeting Oct. 18.

• The town’s bicentennial committee is looking to increase its five-member group. Anyone interested can call the Town Office at 364-7971 or attend the next meeting at 6 p.m. Oct. 12 at the town hall. Plans include a winter carnival day Feb. 13, 2018, which will be Mexico’s 200th birthday.
