Froma Harrop: Trees can help beat the heat
Certainly, multibillion-dollar things can be done to insulate buildings and retrofit the urban infrastructure to absorb less heat. But trees cost so little, do not require new technology and look nice, too.

William LaRochelle: Trump ‘an Olympian mess’ who’s earned derision
Recently, one-time President Trump told a group of conservative college students in Tampa, Florida, that he and his supporters will not break, not yield, never give in, never give up, “never, ever, ever back down” in their fight with the “tyrants” who oppose them because true “Americans kneel to God, and God alone.” Said the […]

Leonard Pitts Jr.: The year (bleep) got real
This is the most important story in the world because it is the world. None of the other things that gobble our attention — Donald Trump, abortion rights, gun violence — matter as much as the inarguable fact that this planet is rapidly growing inhospitable to human life. First, she is dedicated to promoting health and […]

Pamela Larouche: A proposed alternative to lakeside development
John Gendron, in his guest column (“In defense of my vision to boost affordable housing,” July 23), laments that Auburn citizens opposed to lakeside development have no alternative. But I do. I ask people to consider my vision, my modest proposal. Mr. Gendron can develop his in-town backyard of 32-plus acres, with the zoning quota […]
